Chinese Herbal Magick: Moxibustion

Moxa is the herb acupuncturists already burn. In this workshop we'll work it as magick. You start with moxa on its own until you know it, then we'll add garlic and work the two together. Unlit first, then lit once, so you can compare.

It's a recorded workshop. Three hours. Out Sunday, November 22, 2026. Most of it's practice, with me on screen while you work with your own moxa at home, so you can pause it, go back and work at your own pace.

What you learn

  • Moxa, 艾葉 (mugwort), in the Chinese record: what the sources say it does when it burns.
  • How to meet an herb directly and keep a written record of what you find. You'll learn it on moxa first.
  • Garlic, 大蒜, in the record, worked the same way.
  • Moxa on garlic, 隔蒜灸 (moxibustion on garlic), worked as a pair.

What you get

  • The recorded workshop, yours to keep.
  • The moxa monograph, in the format of the garlic monograph: the record, the reading, sources itemised edition by edition. Members of The Secret Menu get it too.
  • A worksheet for your notes.
  • Bring your own moxa, loose or a stick, whichever you've got, and a raw garlic clove. Most of the work is unlit, but for the comparison you'll want a lighter, a heatproof dish and a cup of water on the table beside you.

What comes next

It's the first workshop in the series. Each one adds an herb to moxa, and each herb gets its own monograph, built the way the garlic one was, from the Chinese record outward. You work it alone. Then in combination. And the people who take this one pick the next herb.

It's herbal magick practice. For your own use. Treating patients with these herbs isn't part of it, and nothing here is medical treatment or diagnosis. Lit moxa burns hot. Follow the setup I show you, ventilate the room and keep water close. Raw garlic can irritate skin and burn it if it sits there too long, so keep it off broken skin and wash your hands once we're finished working with it. Every claim in the monographs carries its source, edition named.
